About LifeCenter

LifeCenter Organ Donor Network, "A Donate Life Organization," encourages and coordinates the donation of human organs and tissues for transplantation as an institutional member of the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) and follows all the guidelines for organ sharing.

Who We Serve

LifeCenter serves more than two million people and works with  46  hospitals to facilitate and organ and tissue donation as is the Organ Procurement Organization (OPO) serving 16 counties throughout the Tri-State area which include:

  • Southwest Ohio: Adams, Brown, Butler, Clermont, Clinton, Hamilton, Highland, and Warren.
  • Northern Kentucky: Boone, Campbell, Kenton, Gallatin, Grant and Pendleton
  • Southeast Indiana: Dearborn and Ohio

 

History

1905

First successful cornea transplant.

1954

First successful kidney transplant performed. (Source.)

Late 1960's

The first organ recoveries in the Greater Cincinnati area began at University of Cincinnati Medical Center . The program was established to meet the needs of early renal transplant efforts and was coordinated by the transplant surgeons and nursing staff. 

1981

Organ procurement expanded from a single hospital effort to the establishment of an independent organ recovery agency called Ohio Valley Organ Procurement Organization, supporting the transplant programs at Children's Hospital Medical Center, The Christ Hospital, and University of Cincinnati Medical Center

1984

National Organ Transplant Act establishes nationwide computer registry operated by the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS). (Source.)

1992

UNOS helps found Donate Life America to build public support for organ donation. (Source.)

1999

First successful hand transplant performed by the University of Louisville and Jewish Hospital. (Source.)

2001

For the first time ever, the total of living donors for the year (6,528) exceeds the number of deceased organ donors (6,081).

2003

  • The organization's name changed to LifeCenter Organ Donor Network.
  • April is designated as the National Donate Life Month.

2005

LifeCenter became a full tissue recovery agency coordinating bone, skin, heart valve, and saphenous vein recovery.

2010

LifeCenter celebrates 30 years of service as Greater Cincinnati's organ and tissue recovery organization.
