Want to Get Involved: 5 Things You Can Do!

It goes without saying that organ donation is a worthy cause, and although most people recognize the importance of raising awareness about this vital issue, they are often not sure how they can get involved in promoting organ and tissue donation. Below are five helpful tips you can put into practice to encourage others to join in this life-saving effort.

  1. Register to be an organ and tissue donor.

As the famous saying goes, you can “be the change that you wish to see in the world” by making sure you’re a registered organ and tissue donor in your state. This is a powerful first step towards raising awareness, and it can inspire others to do the same. You can register easily at LifePassItOn.org.

  1. Sign up as a Workplace Partner.

Workplace Partnership for Life is an initiative sponsored by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, and its main function is to help businesses and organizations educate their employees, customers and/or members about the critical importance of organ and tissue donation. By signing up to be a Workplace Partner, you will have access to a wide range of resources to help you create and share donation awareness programs that will be custom-made for your particular company or organization.

Workplace Partners can distribute fact sheets, post social media messages, send out email blasts, and present educational videos that encourage donation. You can find out more details about how to get involved in this program by contacting Katie Dillon, LifeCenter’s Community Relations Manager.

  1. Tell your friends and family about the importance of organ donation.

This can be something as simple as sharing a message on social media, or you could take time to answer questions in one-on-one conversations. Be sure to let them know that you have already made the decision to register as a donor, as this can set an example that will make quite an impact on the people in your sphere of influence.

  1. Spread the word using outreach materials.

LifeCenter is an available resource and will provide any brochures, Donate Life materials and other items as needed. By contacting our office, you can request any materials necessary to help raise awareness. An additional resource, the OrganDonor.gov website has a page full of free digital outreach materials that do a fantastic job of educating and informing people about the importance of registering as an organ and tissue donor. From printable brochures to embeddable videos to radio-ready PSAs, the Organ Donation Outreach Materials page offers a wide range of top-quality resources to help you spread the word.

  1. Take advantage of volunteer opportunities.

You can become a Donate Life Ambassador for organ and tissue donation by volunteering with LifeCenter. There are a variety of important projects that could benefit from your time and talents, including guest speaking at local organizations, assisting with special events, managing information booths at local health fairs, performing administrative work (e.g., phone calls, mailings, etc.), making hospital visits to transplant recipients, and much more. If you’re interested in becoming a LifeCenter volunteer, you can sign up using this web link.

As you’re deciding how you want to get involved, keep this short but powerful phrase in your mind: “Everything counts.” When it comes to raising awareness about something as critically important as organ and tissue donation, there’s no such thing as an insignificant deed. You never really know how your actions might create a ripple effect that can end up benefiting thousands of people’s lives.
